Style: Open platform low bridge double decker
Engine: Leyland E181 7.4 litre heavy oil engine
1947 Leyland PD1
The body of this bus was built by Leyland Motors themselves.
Very much an "in house" bus with chassis and body all sourced in the same factory.
New to Wigan Corporation Transport Department as No. 34 in the fleet. It was one of 75 identical buses delivered over a period of 1946-1947.
A large number of railway lines serving coal mines in the Wigan area crossing main bus routes with limited head room for double decked dictated its height to 13'6". The body style at the time to deal with the problem provided a low flat roofed top deck, bench seats for 4 abreast and a sunken gangway to the offside to allow for people standing to alight or board.
